remember that you were at that time separated from (without) Christ, alienated (being aliens) from the commonwealth of Israel and strangers to the covenants of promise, having no hope and without God in the world.
Let us focus our attention on the phrase,
"you were at that time separated from Christ"
The apostle Paul was writing to the Ephesian believers, under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, to reveal to the believers their natural state (or condition) before they were converted. What a miserable state to be in, to be "separated from Christ"! To be without health, or money, or job, or friends, or comfort, is miserable enough. But a most miserable condition that surpasses all these and much more, is your natural condition that is described as being "separated from Christ". To live in this state is to live on the brink of destruction. Not only does this apply to the Ephesians, but also to every person who is without Christ. This was the state of every Christian before they heard the gospel of Jesus Christ, and repented and believed in Christ as their Lord and Savior.
What does it mean to be "separated from Christ"?
They know not who Christ is--nor what He has done--nor what He taught--nor why He was crucified--nor where He is now--nor what He is to mankind.
A person who thinks that human nature is not corrupt, and sinful, and defiled, also has very low views of God, and is blind to the truth that God is most pure, and holy, and glorious. To be "separated from Christ" is to be without God in the world.
There are multitdues who know every article of the Belief, and can tell things of Christ... who hope to go to heaven because they are moral, well-conducted, say their prayers and go to Church--been baptized and go to the Lord's Table.
...the devils also believe and tremble.
Even the devils know that Christ is the Son of God, but they have no portion in Him. For a person to be without faith in Christ is to be "separated from Christ".
These persons make a habit of going to Church, believing the Christian religion, agree with all the Church ceremonies, but they know nothing of the inward sanctifying work of the Holy Spirit. The affections of the heart, habits, and ways have not been renewed and are not being renewed.
They are yet dead to God.
For a person to have no evidences of inward conversion of heart is to be "separated from Christ" and dead to God.
When the Holy Spirit wakes up a person's conscience, and they're left with past sins, failings, and future judgement, at once they realize that there is no peace for their soul.
Repenting, and praying, and Bible-reading, and church-going, and sacrament-receiving, and self-mortification may be tried, and tried in vain.
True and lasting peace is found in the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Faith in Christ is our peace, for He is our righteousness and Mediator before God.
But we are all like an unclean thing, And all our righteousnesses are like filthy rags; We all fade as a leaf, And our iniquities, like the wind, Have taken us away.
Only by faith in Christ can our sins be forgiven and be made righteous before a holy God.
We have peace through the blood of His cross: peace like a deep mine--peace like an everflowing stream.
Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.
There is only one real hope in which a Christian stands, and that is on the foundation of Jesus Christ.
For no one can lay a foundation other than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ.
It will bear looking at and handling. It will meet every enquiry. Search it through and through, and you will find no flaw whatever in it. Like summer-dried fountains, all other hopes will fail just when your need is the sorest.
If any person is building their lives on top of a foundation other than the foundation of Jesus Christ, then that person is like a foolish man building his house on sand.
And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell, and great was the fall of it.
Are you trusting in things to hold you up when the storms of life come? These things may help, but what good is any of it when your hour of death has arrived and you face judgement? Will fortune, or fame, or security, or family, or religion, save you from the wrath of God? Don't trust in your own wisdom, for Jesus has declared that every person who builds on another foundation will fall.
See the man who would not make God his refuge, but trusted in the abundance of his riches and sought refuge in his own destruction!
Whoever loves his life loses it, and whoever hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life.
Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, and everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die. Do you believe this?” She said to him, “Yes, Lord; I believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, who is coming into the world.”
